Greg Borenstein has published a blog titled All Watched Over: On FOO, Cybernetics, and Big Data in which he reflects on this year’s FOO Camp. The focus at FOO Camp seemed, to Greg at least, to be on how we are collecting a huge amount of data on people’s online behavour and how analysis of this data will lead to better, more objective, decision-making.
To counter-point this prevailing view, Greg compares the belief in ‘big data’ with a previous generation’s belief that the Cybernetics was the way to make objective decisions. His conclusion is that just as Cybernetics didn’t work, blind faith in big data won’t either.
