The latest Nielson research shows games are the most popular app category amongst US smartphone owners who have downloaded an app within the last 30 days, and are also the category people are most likely to spend money buying.
Looking at US smartphone owners who have downloaded an app in the last 30 days:
- 93% would pay to download a game.
- 87% would pay to download an entertainment app.
- 84% would pay to download a productivity app.
- 84% would pay to download a maps / navigation app.
- 77% would pay to download a food app.
- 76% would pay to download a news app.
News publishers seem to be suffering again from people’s unwillingness to pay for news access. Possibly this is for the same reasons paywalls on newspaper websites haven’t prospered — people don’t want to pay for information freely available elsewhere.
