Manchester United is taking a cautious approach with social media, according to a new item in Marketing Week, with no plans to add advertising to its Facebook fan page, and a ‘wait and see’ approach to Twitter.
The MUFC Facebook page has attracted 14 million ‘likes’ since launch last year and the football club is keen to not risk upsetting these fans by adding sponsored links or MUFC commercial messages to the page. For a club often associated with rampant commercialism this is an interesting standpoint to take.
When it comes to Twitter the club is still deciding if an official Twitter account will add value to their communication plans, Marketing week quotes Jonathan Rigby, MUFC Head of Marketing, as saying:
“There will be no official Twitter site until we have satisfied ourselves that we have determined a role for Twitter.”
